From the Stagecoach to the Intercity
One of the important routes through the Swiss Alps has always been the St. Gotthard Pass. In the summer of 1882, the era of travel on the stagecoach ended and the hour of the rail ways had arrived.
This fascinating DVD production takes you on an interesting journey through a beautiful part of the Swiss Alps via the world-famous St. Gotthard Rail Way. The line from Zurich and the line from Basel via Lucerne connect just south of Lake Zug where the St. Gotthard begins.
It travels along the eastern shore of Lake Lucerne towards the Reuss Valley to Goeschenen and reaches a height of almost 2000 feet above sea level. It passes through three connecting tunnels - of which the Gotthard tunnel is 9.5 miles long. On the southern approach between Airolo and Biasca the line rises 2,750 feet with four connecting tunnels.
This most famous route in the Swiss Federal Rail Way network gradually descends from Biascah towards Bellinzona and from there heads via Lugano to the border station at Chiasso...
With rare historical archive footage. Recommended by the SBB.
