The small town of Brig is situated in Switzerland Ìs Upper Rhone Valley and is the starting point for a trip on one of the most exciting railroads in the Alps. The line climbs almost 3,300 feet through the wild romantic Matter Valley to Zermatt. Changing to the internation- ally famous Gornergrat train, the journey continues almost 5,000 feet higher to the lofty world of the Glaciers. The railroad terminal, about 10,000 feet above sea level, offers a grandiose panorama from the Gornergrat summit of the âWhite Giantsâ of Switzerland Ìs Grenzkamms: Monte Rosa, Lyskamm, Castor, and Pollux, Breithorn, Matterhorn and many more peaks of more than 13,000 feet.
The Gornergrat Railroad was opened in 1898 and was the first electric rack-railway in Europe to operate up to over 10,000 feet. We have also some fascinating archive footage, which tells the story of those tough pioneers of the last century, who despite the most desperate odds, built a mountain rail masterpiece!
