This superb video productions is a "must-have" for any true lover of fine art and architecture
The grandiose tastes and excessive lifestyle of King Ludwig von Wittlesbach are forever reflected and preserved in the magnificent opulent splendor of his three castle creations’ Neuschwanstein, Herrenchiemsee and Linderhof. Each castle is an artistic masterpiece influenced by fantasy, romanticism and youthful idealism, and inspired by the music of Richard Wagner.
Over a twenty-year period, Ludwig designed and built an awe-inspiring architectural legacy. His three ornate palaces and luxuriously decorated mountaintop retreats have been captured as never before in this outstanding DVD.
Known throughout the world as the "Fairy Tale King," Ludwig lived a solitary life surrounded by painted and sculpted images of fantasy companions and a society he never knew. Withdrawn and insecure, he suffered from severe mood swings and flamboyant theatrical outbursts. Whether he was a complete madman, a progressive thinking free spirit, a childlike egomaniacal monarch or a lonely and confused eccentric, King Ludwig II was certainly one of the most unique and colorful figures in history. At age 40 he died as mysteriously as he had lived.
The legend behind the legacy: who was he?
Disturbed daydreamer or detailed perfectionist? It took 17 master woodcarvers more than 4 years to hand-carve his bed! He copied the palace at Versailles’ twice! He built a giant "Venus Grotto", complete with heated lake, live swans and alternating red and blue stage lighting.
Was he the original oddball or simply a nonconformist? Like clockwork, every May he saddled up and rode a grueling 60 to 80 miles a day to his various mountain huts and hunting lodges. Upon his arrival, he expected 12-course meals and fireworks displays’ even in daylight.
Was he a 19th Century "techie?" He owned the world’s first sleigh with electric lights. His mechanical "self-setting tables" were standard equipment in each of his castles. A little "nightlight" in the bedroom was a "big deal" in the castle.
Compared to other kings, Ludwig II was really rather lovable. Other kings spent money on senseless, destructive wars. Ludwig invested in the creation of eternal monuments dedicated to goodness and beauty.
The legacy of "crazy" King Ludwig lives on in the extravagance and grandeur of his great Bavarian castles.
